Dune question: Why doesn't the Spacing Guild just take over the universe? This question has been bugging the shit out of me for decades. In a book series that's all about political skullduggery, there's an annoying logical conundrum. Is there an answer I've overlooked in the books? Early in the Dune series, it's established that the Spacing Guild has a monopoly on interstellar travel. It's not really a monopoly, inasmuch as they're the only ones that have managed to do it safely and effectively. Apparently, in the backstory of the universe, it could be done without the use of Guild Navigators, at a cost of a 10 percent failure rate -- in one out of 10 trips, the ships were just lost in the vastness of space. Later, advanced computers could do it, but then there was the Butlerian Jihad that destroyed all the computers. In the meantime, the Spacing Guild discovered the ability of melange to guide navigation. Later in the books, thousands of years after th

Hello, I'm using a 15-inch late 2011 Macbook Pro, and I want to play Guild Wars 2 on it. However, I'm having a really difficult time here. I am one who wants my games to look pretty, and unfortunately, GW2 is an extremely demanding game. Does anyone know what I could do that might help me run it on the higher, or possibly even the highest graphics settings? Please note that I know next to nothing about computers. But I have heard that an external hard drive or an external graphics card may help. I've also tried cleaning out my computer. The only thing installed on it now is Word and Powerpoint, iTunes, and Guild Wars 2. But, still, I have a tremendously difficult time with the game. Any thoughts? Thanks! Yes, I'm running the Mac beta, that's all that they have available for download as far as I know. I just did a big cleanup though and got rid of GarageBand and all the stuff from my iTunes that I never listen to, so that should help some, especially since GarageBand took up a TON of s

My friend is telling me it is bad for the TV but I don't understand since I do play PS3 on it as well. I live in a studio apartment so getting a monitor would mean getting a desk and I don't have much space! Thanks.

In order to illustrate a part of a loooong blog post I'm finishing about World of Warcraft, I'm looking for a small, one panel comic that features Santa Claus raising his fist and, to his apparent disbelief, yelling "For the Horde!" to Rudolph. For the life of me I can't find it. Could any of you hope me on the matter? An Alliance counterpart would be fine too - doesn't have to be santa, just to be funny. Additionnatlly, I'm open to any funny and/or representative illustration/video about WoW. I'm using a few videos already: Office Space commercial, "Live to win" section of the South Park episode, and the "Gay Bar" video from the Pretty Pink Ponies guild. I won't be putting the "Warcraft is for porn" video, 'cos my post is all written in French. In short, I don't need much else than the Hordy Santa, but if you know of something truly good, please don't hesitate! Thanks!

It doesn't have to be a great graphics card as i only need to play Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 when it comes out.. But my absolute maximum is £450, the cheaper the better, does such a laptop exist?!?! I don't care about screen size, not too fussed about hard disk space (they all seem to come with loads anyway!) and want a minimum of 2gb RAM. Anyone know of any models? Elmagroud, the best way to get answers is to post your own standalone question :) Hope you find your answer soon!
Please recommend some TV shows and other forms of storytelling that are in a very specific and possibly just now emerging genre? These are the things that fit into the genre: The Guild, Big Bang Theory, IT Crowd, and to a certain extent, Scott Pilgrim, although that's up for a certain amount of debate. (The movie definitely fit this genre more than the comic for me.) These are shows made by and for nerds (geeks dorks whatever!) about nerds. Semi-realistic ones in some ways and almost always humorously self-deprecating but with heart. People who don't fulfill their superhero fantasies but do fulfill their making a space invader of Dr Pepper cans fantasies. People pretty much like me in their obsessions and knowledge, but funnier and probably secretly more attractive. These are also shows that really, I'd expect to be made using twenty bucks and a roll of duct tape and surreptitiously passed around via fifth generation VHS or CDR and occasionally screen
My husband is going to turn 30 in a couple of weeks. We don't usually give gifts on birthdays but since this is a big one I want to get him something special. I could use some help deciding what that could be! Details about him within. My budget is about $100 and it has to be available online for shipping to Canada as there are no stores where we live. About him: he's a successful small business owner with an incredibly high-stress job in a fast-paced industry, particularly in the winter. In his (increasingly rare) downtime he likes to play videogames (most recently Borderlands and currently Guild Wars). A couple of years ago he bought all the parts for and built a computer that I like to joke is worthy of the Department of Defense. He likes antique metal machining tools and equipment (to give you an idea of his interest level, here's a comment he wrote using my account to answer someone's question a while back). He also likes to machine/weld complex heavy tools and
I've got a brand new (refurb) Retina MacBook Pro, fresh out of the cellophane wrapper. I've been eking out a slow and cluttered existence on a combination of my iPad mini, my oldish Mac Mini, my iPhone, and a desktop Windows machine (for gaming) for a couple of years. I haven't had a laptop in... I can't even remember if I have ever had a laptop. Help me find the perfect set of apps for it? Snowflake details inside. When I was in the decision phase of which laptop to buy, I struggled with defining myself. Am I a writer who sometimes plays games? Or a gamer who sometimes writes? Choosing a decently tricked-out refurb meant I didn't have to choose. Here are some of my laptoppy priorities: 1) Fiction writing. I've been using Byword, for the cloudsync/dropbox - is there something better out there? I used to use Scrivener, and would be willing to again. 2) Web surfing/email. I've always used Mail for, well, Mail, and some combination of Firefox/Chrome/

What is a great webhosting company for creating a gaming community website? (Not necessarily a clan, just like minded people)
I've looked art enjin and it looks more guild based. It seems its just to show off raid progression. What about square space?
I'm looking to get a new computer, but not just any computer, a custom computer. I want it to be able to play any any new game and upcoming game on the highest graphics settings without lag. I also want it to be able to play older games like StarCraft, Diablo, Diablo II, Warcraft II: BNE, SWAT 3, and other games from the 1990s and early 2000s. However, I don't know how to do this sort of thing, like order a custom PC and tell them what I want and what-not. But here's pretty much what I want for it: Specifications -Windows 7 (I'll multi-boot it with XP) -Several hundred GB of hard-drive space -God-like amount of RAM (like anywhere from 15-30 thousand RAM) -2 DVD-RW drives -USB ports -A fantastic HD monitor -A fantastic video card -A fantastic sound card -3½-inch floppy drive -Everything else being extremely great and high quality Here are some examples of new and upcoming games that I'd like it to be able to run on their highest graphical and audio settings without the game
I was wondering if anyone could suggest to me more shows to watch on netflix. I like comedies that are funny (obviously) and have somewhat of a storyline or at least stay interesting. Shows I've watched (please skim before suggesting): Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, Reno 911, South Park, Arrested Development, 30 Rock, The League, The Guild, How I Met Your Mother, Raising Hope, The Office (UK and US), Parks and Recreation, Better Off Ted, Bobs Burgers, Spaced, Skins, The Inbetweeners (UK), Workaholics, Wilfred, The Whitest Kids U Know, The Cleveland Show, Shin Chan, Drawn Together, My Little Pony, Sports Night, Happy Tree Friends, Friends With Benefits, and maybe a few more. I've also seen the IT Crowd, I forgot that one...thanks though :/ I've also seen Code Monkeys, 10 Items or Less, and The Peep Show.

Haha, this just kind of like a poll. I want to hear peoples opinions... Please only if you played FF 11 and or SW galaxies... I played both of them, and though im a tad bit bigger Star wars Fan I had more fun playing 11, but galaxies was a better game in sense of guild towns, housing, space travel etc.I got into SW Galaxies right after the super nerf so everyone was kind of done.
